GROUNDED

As I understand it, this is a debated topic, but I would really appreciate your opinions. And please don't consider anything you have to say as "unlearned"; everything posted is for the glory of God. So if you have something to say, I invite you, SAY IT!

I believe that this should not be an issue at all. But...How Readest Thou?

Good question... but for a Bible study we need scriptures to look at so we can discuss this from the Bible's viewpoint and not our own.

4 me.. yes, women could be pastor too.. though there were passages in the bible saying opposite to the answer that i have, but if we try to read other verses also, like what was written in Acts 2: 17, God has poured out his spirit to men and women..speaking about his words, prophesying .and so on.. to conclude a women could be a pastor depending on the gift God has given to her, or the truth that she may have in accordance to Gods wisdom, to the fact that it is God that gives the authority approving she could or couldnt be a true and sincere pastor in Gods sight...

This has been something I have struggled with since going to college. I go to a college where most people believe it is okay for women to be pastors which has forced me to really study and look at the issue. After everything I have read in the Bible I don't see how it would be okay for a woman to be a pastor. He created men and women differently and they are on this earth to fulfill different roles. Women should not be in a leadership position over men. This doesn't change a woman's worth,God has just ordained different roles for different genders. I mean if women are pastors in a church where they are leading over men, what happens in there marital relationships because women are supposed to serve and submit to their husband. How can she be leading her husband in the church but only following him and submitting to him at home? It just doesn't work. So no I don't think women should be pastors.

Hey Katie, Thank you so much for your well thought out response; I really appreciate it! You're really wise.

Can I ask you something? What do you think on the interpretation which says that women can be pastors because the Lord poured out His Spirit on men and women; and the fact that Phillip's daughters prophesied?

In one of paul's letters he also mentions a female (or pair of female) pastors i can't remember where but he does not condemn them being teachers

Ok about the " women can be pastors because the Lord poured out His Spirit on men and women"
Versed exactly in Act 2:17 - 21 it says

17" 'In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.
19I will show wonders in the heaven above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20The sun will be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved.'

That's it. It doesn't actually say they can be pastors because of that. And prophesying isn't necessarily teaching a congregation

About "the fact that Phillip's daughters prophesied"
Versed exactly in Acts 21:7-11

7We continued our voyage from Tyre and landed at Ptolemais, where we greeted the brothers and stayed with them for a day. 8Leaving the next day, we reached Caesarea and stayed at the house of Philip the evangelist, one of the Seven. 9He had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.

10After we had been there a number of days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. 11Coming over to us, he took Paul's belt, tied his own hands and feet with it and said, "The Holy Spirit says, 'In this way the Jews of Jerusalem will bind the owner of this belt and will hand him over to the Gentiles.' "

That's it. It's just a fact that was not detailed so we don't know who they were prophesying to. So we still have no grounds to say that it's ok for women to be pastors.
In 1Timothy 3 Christ notes a specific gender by mentioning that you must be a husband of only one wife.

With all these speculations we skip around it all we want but the bible clearly states in 1 Corinthians 14:33-34 "As in all the congregations of the saints, 34women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says." plain and simple

As women we have our place as daughters of Christ we are to teach our children (ex. Timothy's mother and grandmother) and to spread the gospel but not in a position as an overseer/pastor or deacon. We are also given the right as we get older to teach younger women (ex. Naomi &Ruth).

To Jonathan Paul frequently mentions women who have helped him and who work hard for the gospel but never have I read that any were pastors

Amen Tempress!
i'll be the first to say, this exactly what some of us have been trying to say to those who feel women can be pastors, but then they all tend to dance around it. I Corinthians 14:33-34 really does settle it. God has designed certain roles for men and women, which, btw, are both equal in God's eyes, but not according to the world's standards. haha, i love how Peter said it awhile ago, women just weren't made to be pastors.

just to reaffirm, yes, women can spread the Gospel, but not in the office of pastor or deacon.

i agree with you Katie, i also think it kinda takes away a woman's femininity, i'm not implying that a woman shouldnt serve in the Church at all, i think it's wonderful to have women serve, there are some things that a woman can do that a man cant do, and some things that a man can do that woman cant do, leading in the Church is of those things.
i think that being a pastor is a full-time role... maybe i'm too feminized by our culture, but i kinda think it's okay for a woman to be an associate pastor... but then again, as Art mentioned earlier, what are the odds of all the men in the church suddenly unbelieving or incapable? incapablity for a man (i think) is a non-issue. God created and gifted men to lead, whether that's in the home, the Church, business, etc.... unless if he has a physical/mental disablity i understand, but there must be someone in the church who's willing and able to fill that role.

i'll be honest, before i read this discussion i thought it was okay for a woman to lead in the Church, but after reading I Timothy 2-3, i not only know what God has to say about it, but i also understand why He gave the role of a pastor/bishop to a man.

I agree Katie. At first I assumed that women could be called to be pastors, but after researching the scriptures (thank you Art), God has revealed that women should not be pastors.

oh yeah plain and simple i guess read 1st timothy 11-15 i think it says

11.A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness.

12.But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet.

13.For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve.

14.And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.

15.But women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint

well to be honest i think we live in a genereation of joel 2:28-31

so yes woman can preach or share the gospel like women of God in the old testaments..or the new what hapend to mary magdelene?? anyways if they try to abuse the power of authority of which men was created for than they shouldnt be pastors
